Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence (DC SW)

Paid Internships in Summer 2021 for Undergraduate and Graduate Students in STEM

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student interested in pursuing a career in science or engineering? Would you like to get some hands-on experience at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) next summer?

At the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence (NCARAI) we research how to facilitate effective teamwork between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This involves researching how humans do tasks that AI systems are not yet good at, how we can use that knowledge to build better AI systems, and researching how humans interact with artificial systems including robots.

Some projects at the lab currently:
-AI capable of learning new objects one-on-one human-robot interaction.
-Robotic systems to enter unknown terrain, scan for objects, and identify safety hazards
-Robotic swarms that coordinate movement without active human control
-Behavioral studies on how humans reason to develop human-like reasoning in AI systems
-Systems capable of giving explanations of what they are doing
-NCARAI participates in the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) through the Department of Navy. All program details are available at

Some details:
-10-week summer internship
-Stipend of $7000 for new undergraduate interns; $11000 for graduate interns
-Eligibility requirements: US citizenship and a full-time student in Spring 2021 with 31+ credits
-Students will be selected on the basis of grades, science and mathematics courses taken, scores on national standardized tests, areas of interest, teacher recommendations and personal student statement.
-Major field should be relevant to NCARAI’s research, including various engineering fields, computer science, cognitive science, psychology, human-computer interaction, linguistics as well as
-Applications, including recommendations and transcripts, are due November 30, 2020 by 10:00 PM Eastern
